Matt joined the group in 1997 when Dan asked if he could play the drums on this one song ("Maybe") he was going to sing for this chick. Matt lied and said he could, so he began practicing this one song on a snare and the infamous garbage can. Once that one song was mastered, Dan had this crazy idea of working on *another* song. Eventually there were FIVE songs Matt could play on the "drum set". At this point a hit-hat had been added, and the skill increased on such difficult songs as "Marty's Song". By the time "Starship Wayne" (now "Starship Huang") was written, Dan approached Matt with yet another crazy idea: play on a real drum set. Matt was overwhelmed by the presence of a real drum set, and began doubting his skills, but finally he got used to it, even though he doubted he was playing it "properly". This drum set was then replaced by a set almost identical to it, although Dan claimed this one had magical properties. Now, the garbage can is all but obsolete, but all the while Matt secretly dreams of being a guitar player (see "She Said", "Dope Fiend", and Noise Floor)
